Therapeutic Yoga

The primary mission of Child's Pose Therapeutic Yoga is to provide children and adults with developmental disabilities and/or medical fragility with the comprehensive and therapeutic aspects of all that yoga has to offer. While yoga has been around for 5,000 years it is only in recent times that the full benefits of its effects as an adjunct therapy in the healthcare arena has come to light. While the benefits of yoga therapy are extensive, some of these benefits are listed below:

-increased range of motion of all extremities
-increased circulation to all extremities
-improvement in shallow or ineffective breathing patterns
-increased trunk strength and sitting balance
-relaxation of negative extensor tone patterns, hypertonia
-improvement of muscle control in hypotonia
-coordination and balance improvement, sitting or standing
-increased intestinal motility with improvement in bowel and bladder problems often noted
-overall calming effect of the nervous system; additionally, a reduction in the number or severity of seizures is often seen in some clients; current medical research is exploring and supporting yoga as an effective supplemental treatment in the management of seizures in some individuals

-increased self-awareness of body in relationship to surroundings
-improvement in visual attending
-multi-sensory stimulation provided in each session; tactile(touch), auditory(hearing), visual, and olfactory(smell)
-assists in sleep regulation in individuals with problems in this area
While these benefits listed are anticipated in supportive literature, they are also proven to be observed in the clients I currently see. Listing them is very easy to do as they are actually witnessed on a daily basis. Textbooks are not needed for reference. While all people can benefit from yoga, those with certain medical diagnoses experience even greater benefits. Some of these diagnoses, while not limited to them, are as follows:
-Cerebral Palsy
-Autism
-Down's Syndrome
-Retts Syndrome

To date there has not been a child or adult for whom yoga therapy was not appropriate. Clients with tracheostomies, gastrostomies, and even on ventilators can benefit from all that yoga therapy has to offer. This is where my nursing background merges with my yoga background to provide a very specialized and unique therapy. Medical contraindications are always taken into account to ensure the client's safety.
